Pike and Shot: A Preview of Elegant Digital Warfare
Doug at Cry Havoc has long been an advocate of Pike and Shot. I finally purchased the game during the recent Slitherine/Matrix sale on Steam and I am glad I did. There is a simple elegance to it which is appealing.
Movement is tile-based and combat consists of cannonade, melee and musketry. The interface is slim and easy to use. Learning the strengths and weaknesses of the various units is going to be an interesting part of the game for me as I've never really delved too deeply into the period's warfare (I've always been more interested in the politics of the 30 Years War).
The game features a random battle generator (my skirmish above is from that), a map editor (which I can't wait to try), 5 different periods of warfare including the 30 Years War and the English Civil War. It also has a campaign interface which I haven't tried, PBEM multiplayer (which I am about to try) and a number of battles for each of the major periods of warfare.
